McCallister held open the window blinds and watched Ellis pull out of the parking lot as Pelletier approached.

“What the hell happened with Becca? Is she okay?” Pelletier asked.

McCallister spun around. “Uh, I think so, yeah.” He didn’t want to be the one to tell everyone about Hank. It wasn’t his place, and now he felt guilty for it. If she’d wanted everyone to know, she would’ve told them earlier. Now, they all looked at him: Lewis, Fletch, Bevins, Pelletier standing here with that look on his face. Like he was about to lose his best friend, or the woman he loved. The guy didn’t hide his feelings well. “You know what, I’m sure she’ll call and tell us all what’s going on. You know Becca—”

“Yeah, I do,” Pelletier cut in. “We all do, so maybe I’ll just call and ask her myself.” He reached for his phone and dialed her number.

McCallister returned to his desk when it appeared she hadn’t answered the line. Pelletier returned his phone to his pocket, and he glanced back. “Nothing?”

“No, she didn’t answer.” He returned to his desk.

“Man, we have to move on this information, right?” Bevins asked. “Like Becca said? We can’t waste time waiting around for her.”

“No, I get that,” McCallister replied. “Let’s get started on those death certs. They’ll tell us a lot.”

“On it.” Bevins turned on his heel.

Meanwhile, McCallister felt the pull to Ellis. He was worried about her. Probably more than he should be. Definitely more than he should be. If Hank didn’t make it…“No, don’t,” he whispered.

When a call came in on his phone, he hoped it was her. Instead he answered, “Moss, yeah, what’s up?”

“We have everything from the storage unit you and Ellis requested. It’s being transferred to Evidence now. Figured you’d want to be the one to sign off on it.”

“Yeah, thanks. I’ll be right down.” He ended the call and walked ahead, stopping at Bevin’s desk. “I have to run down to Evidence. They’re bringing in Satchel’s things now. I’ll see what they have. You keep on those death certs.”

“You got it,” Bevins replied.

McCallister carried on to the stairs and jogged down to the first floor, where he reached the Evidence room. Sergeant Moss stood at the cage where they kept the guns, drugs, and money. “Hey, Moss. Thanks for the call.”

“Yeah, of course. I tried Ellis, but I got her voicemail.”

“She had a thing. I’ll contact her later and let her know.”

“Cool.” Moss headed back toward the piles of boxes. “Anyway, here’s everything my team pulled out of there. No paperwork left inside the storage unit. I even had them check in the seat cushions of the couches that guy had. And Ellis mentioned something about chemicals or whatever.”

“Yeah, did your people find any?” McCallister asked.

“No. There was nothing.”

“Okay. I’ll stick around here and see to it everything is entered, and then we’ll see what we can find.”

Moss eyed the stack of boxes. “Have fun, man. There’s a lot here.”
